Argentina forward Lionel Messi has written a request to FIFA that his four international game ban be revoked, El Mundo Deportivo report.

Messi was handed a disciplinary action for verbally insulting a match official during his country's World Cup qualifier match against Chile last week.

The Argentina captain was fined 10,000 Swiss francs ($10,160) by the FIFA disciplinary panel and will also miss three more of Argentina's four World Cup qualifiers games - Uruguay, Peru and Venezuela.

In the Barça's star nine-paragraph letter, He claimed asserted that his words were not aimed at the football official and that he shouted "at the air. "

"I vehemently deny having offended assistant referee 1 during the game against Chile, and more so do not believe that my conduct falls under article 57 of FIFA's disciplinary code, Messi wrote.

Meanwhile, FIFA seems to consider the player to have broke the law by displaying "offensive behavior" towards the assistant referee.

However, Messi wrote: "Assistant referee 1, of the Brazilian nationality, perfectly understood what I was saying, so much so that we spoke amicably and at no time did my words offend or insult the official.

"If any of my words made assistant referee 1ul uncomfortable, they were never directed at him but rather to the air and for that, I apologise."

In conclusion, he wrote: "I hereby expressly request for the disciplinary case to be dismissed without any sanction against me."

Claudio Tapia who was recently elected as the president of the Argentina Football Association on Wednesday, told a news conference that the federation are working on the the player's appeal.

He said during the news conference: "We have the best team of lawyers on this issue trying to reduce Messi's suspension."

Barcelona released a statement earlier in the day expressing their "surprise and indignation" at the sanction.

The statement is as follows: "The club considers the four-match suspension finally imposed on the Argentine player to be unfair and totally disproportionate.

"Finally, FC Barcelona wishes to reiterate its support in terms of Leo Messi, an exemplary player in terms of conduct both on and off the pitch."
